Feedback on Color Blind event

I've received some great feedback and ideas in reaction to the Color Blind event from Cinqué Hicks of Code Z. The cross-pollination idea may be something that we can achieve with some help from MODA. I'd love some input. Thanks.

from Cinqué's message:

“the most interesting thing to me seemed to be how this dialog is really just getting started among the design community. it all seemed very earnest, but in fact people's language for discussing the issue felt very rudimentary actually. it parallels (to me) our interview with Jonathan Jackson where I felt that even his language regarding the issue of race and its intersection with design was pretty basic.

if something like this were to happen again, it might be interesting to take a cross-disciplinary approach--or bring in voices from industries where this discussion has been going on for a long time, and where people have formulated some pretty sophisticated formulations of the problems and possible solutions. i'm thinking particularly film and architecture. there may be some opportunities for cross-pollination there.”

"the 'aha' moment of the evening came when the panel agreed that nobody 'gives' a designer equality--every designer must earn it through high creative standards, preparation and by treating every project as though it were one's first big break. Proactive diversification doesn't mean picking a lesser talent to achieve a quota."

This quote is taken from the AIGA Communique email summary.

Why is it when we talk about diversity that giving someone of color a chance always equates to picking someone of lesser talent who under normal circumstances wouldn't make the cut? Its funny how that was your group's aha moment, and similarly how most discussions surrounding affirmative action always center around this point. What about all the people who are just as good or better, who still find it hard to break the glass ceiling due to racial, sexual, and gender discrimination?

If that was truly your "aha moment" that is sad, and your group wasted its time, because you came to the obvious , predictable, and tired conclusion. You did not even need to leave home to come to that conclusion.

I also question what the panel looked like who was dicussing this in the first place.

Wow -I truly find your comment lazy and ignorant. I personally do not feel that complaining and not getting involved to help find a solution is the problem. That is what you should be questioning. If you really care about the issue, then sit back and not do anything?

It is obvious that you are a young, upcoming designer who has yet to explore opportunities that
lead you to unique and creative perceptions about
race, ethnicity and culture. From my perspective you are clicking the same old complaints and end Your wasted breathe with no positive feedback to lead the change.

I enjoyed the event al;though I think we could have gone much more into the answers and not the debate. I have worked in the creative community for over 20 years and find myself still asking why
do we not value diversity in the workplace more
but know that it is a matter of negatives attitudes being routed out and positive experience being shared to bring us together as creative people and then explore who we can help each other pull away from what is perceive "good" or "normal". Move past what is expected and not be afraid to be challenged, whether in design or our social environments. Colorblind actually inspired me as
an "older" design of color to get out there, mentor,
volunteer my time and gift my experience as it might inspired someone else.

It is "sad" to see your obviously emotional comment become an attack on the what could be the beginning of an end to your so called "glass ceiling".
